National Nonprofit Day: Celebrating the Heart of Bella Smiles for Developmental Disabilities đź’ś

Every year on August 17th, communities across the country pause to honor National Nonprofit Day — a day dedicated to recognizing the organizations that work tirelessly to uplift, empower, and strengthen the world around them. For Bella Smiles for Developmental Disabilities, this day is more than a celebration. It is a reflection of our journey, our impact, and the incredible community that makes our mission possible.

As a small nonprofit with a big heart, National Nonprofit Day gives us the chance to highlight the work we’ve accomplished this year — both here in Washington State and in Uganda — and to honor the volunteers, donors, families, and partners who stand with us.

đź’ś Why National Nonprofit Day Matters to Bella Smiles

Nonprofit work is powered by compassion, advocacy, and community. It means showing up every day with the belief that every child deserves a voice, every family deserves support, and every story deserves to be heard.

For Bella Smiles, this day matters because:

  • We are a community-built organization, created from lived experience and fueled by love.

  • We rely on the generosity of donors, sponsors, volunteers, and partners.

  • Every program, every event, every family we support is made possible through collective effort.

National Nonprofit Day is our moment to celebrate YOU — the people who believe in inclusion, advocacy, and the power of community.

🌟 Our Impact in 2024–2025: A Year of Growth, Advocacy & Community

Drawing from the work highlighted on BellaSmiles.org, here are the accomplishments we’re proud to celebrate this National Nonprofit Day:

🌍 Impact in Washington State

This year, Bella Smiles continued strengthening its presence across Washington through advocacy, education, and community engagement.

✨ Advocacy & Family Support

We’ve supported families navigating developmental disabilities by providing resources, guidance, and culturally responsive advocacy. Many families in immigrant communities — especially those new to disability systems — found a safe place to ask questions, learn, and receive support.

✨ Assistive Technology & AAC Empowerment

One of our core missions is helping children communicate. This year, we expanded our Assistive Technology & AAC storytelling work, helping families understand communication devices, access tools, and celebrate their children’s voices.

✨ Community Events & Inclusion

From cultural gatherings to community vendor events, Bella Smiles showed up across Washington to raise awareness, share resources, and build connections. Our 6th Anniversary Fundraiser was a beautiful reminder of how powerful community can be when we come together.

✨ Partnerships & Representation

We strengthened partnerships with local organizations, cultural groups, and faith communities — including the Uganda Catholic Community of Washington — ensuring families feel seen, supported, and included.

Impact in Uganda

Bella Smiles was born from lived experience — from a mother’s journey, from cultural roots, and from a desire to ensure no child is left behind.

This year, our work in Uganda continued to grow:

✨ Disability Awareness & Education

We supported families and communities in Uganda by raising awareness about developmental disabilities, inclusion, and early intervention — especially in areas where resources are limited.

✨ Community Outreach

Through partnerships and cultural connections, we helped families access support networks, education, and advocacy tools. Our work bridges Washington and Uganda, showing that inclusion has no borders.

✨ Cultural Empowerment

We continued uplifting disability stories within Ugandan communities, helping families feel empowered rather than isolated.

🌸 A Major Milestone: Our Guide to Good Hygiene During Menstruation for Girls with IDD

One of our proudest accomplishments this year is our Grant-funded project: “Guide to Good Hygiene During Menstruation for Girls with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD).”

This guide is now in its final stages of editing and preparing for approval — and soon, it will be available to the community.

✨ Built With the Community, For the Community

To create this guide, we held two community sessions with girls, families, and members of the IDD community. Their voices shaped the content, their experiences guided the topics, and their creativity inspired the artwork.

This collaborative approach ensured the guide is:

  • Accessible

  • Culturally responsive

  • Empowering

  • Easy to understand

  • Rooted in real experiences

✨ What the Guide Provides

This resource will support girls with IDD as they navigate menstruation by offering:

  • Clear, visual hygiene instructions

  • Emotional support tools

  • Safety guidance

  • Communication strategies

  • Tips for caregivers

  • Empowerment-focused education

  • Healthy decision-making skills

Menstruation can be confusing or overwhelming for girls with IDD — but with the right tools, it becomes an opportunity for independence, confidence, and dignity. This guide is one of the most meaningful projects we’ve ever created, and we cannot wait to share it with the world.
